Fashion Advertising: 1930's-present

Fashion Advertising
1930's-present

I was inspired by the Mad Men TV series for this post. Mad Men is so sexist and dated to our current eyes but it was the norm back in the day. It got me thinking what has been considered normal in the past for fashion advertising so I choose a few decades to compare visually................

1930's

These ads from the 1930's seem really reserved (even the semi naked one which is cheeky not sexy). Even though the ads are not all advertising fashion they give a good representation of fashion from this era. Boring yet mildly interesting for me!

1950's

I like this series from the 50's. The ladies are voluptuous, fun and classic in the ads.

1970's

This series from the 70s is my fav! So fun and groovy. The ads have a sense of humour and also reference music which is cool. There is a sense of freedom.

1990's

The era of heroin chic and the first supermodels. Glamour, wealth and grunge all merged together.

Present

I think we are in the era of anything goes with fashion advertising. So long as it captures your target market's attention, feel free shooting your product in any way you see fit. I'm cool with this freedom although it's a little intimidating to eventually have to compete with such creative folk.
